20-1 - 20-5

20-1
"A scene is a single action or process" (Stinson 394).

20-2
"A sequence is a single unit of fiction or non-fiction content" (Stinson 394).

20-3
The principle of editing emphasis is used by managing content, angle, timing,                          , and rreinforcement.
c. shot order

20-4
Music videos are a good example of                                       or "cutting to music."
b. rhythmic cutting

20-5
This year we explored many different types of video project creations. Opener, Teleprompter,
Commercial, Interview, Project Choice, Anchor Piece.

My favorite project this year was the almost final project of the Video Montage.  I enjoyed this project because I was able to make it my own and I could make it for my mom.  It was a more personalized project in which I could use my own creativity.  My least favorite project was the Commercial.  I didn't like it because there was many hours of editing that needed to be done.  It was more tedious than fun.  I would have liked to have made a music video as an entire class because it would have been more memorable to me.

19-1 - 19-5

19-1
Editing is the task of taking the materials recorded during production and transformation them into a finished audiovisual program.

1. Software programs must be organized.
2. Features must be labeled, often with icons or words that fail to illustrate its function.

19-4
The name of the editing system that we use in video class is a work screen from Casablanca.

19-5
Two ways to "Archieve" your video in the finished form:
1. Rendering
2. Storing
19-2
Some of the many layers that make up an edited program are production video and audio, audio effects and background tracks, music, transitions, DGEs as well as title and other graphics.

19-3
Two challenges of digital editing:

18-1 - 18-5

18-1
Coverage means more than just recorded the production.  Good coverage requires:
1. Repetition
2. Overlap
3. Variety and Protection
4. Cutaways - shots that show information other than the main action

18-2
Good continuity within a program/video production "appears to be a single continous presentation that has no mismatches in information, action, or screen direction" (Stinson 345).

18-3
Three styles of coverage:
1. Repition
2. Overlap
3. Variety and Protection - varying angles helps make invisible edits and tends to hide small mismatches between different takes.

18-4
Three types of screen direction.
1. Look
2. Movement
3. Convention - how the screen is displayed, for example a car traveling from New York to California is going from left to right on a map, therefore it is displayed that way on the screen.

18-5
Action line is an imaginary line seperating camera and subject.  Keeping the camera on its side of the line maintains screen direction.

17-1 - 17-5

17-1:
Four main tasks that a video director must have to have the ability to juggle: 1. Communication, 2. Performance, 3. Editing,  and 4. Camera.

17-2
Inexperienced directors have problems with important information because they tend to omit it.

17-3
When adding emphasis to information you have several tools to use.  These four tools are: 1. Image Size, 2. Composition, 3. Camera Angle, and 4. Shot Duration.
Shot Duration is the control of how long you show a certain piece of information on the screen.

17-4
Feeling can be created utilizing camera angles, image sizes, shot lengths, lens perspectives, camera movement as well as other tools. A director can represent feeling within a series of shots by image size.  Image size controls the emotional impact created.

17-5
Four ways a director can assist actors with being effective on camera: 1. Turn off the tally light,  2. Keep actor movements simple and natural, 3. Use cue cards and 4. Create marks on the floor for the actor's convience.

16-1 - 16-5

16-1
A microphone is "a device that translates the original noise created by a pattern of moving air into an electrical signal that closely imitates that pattern" (Stinson 302).

16-2
The types of microphones that we use in video class everyday are independent mikes, user-worn mikes and cabled mikes.  A cabled mike is exactly what it sounds as, being a microphone communicated via special cables.

16-3
Two ways a microphone can transmit a signal is 1. cable transmission and 2. radio transmission.

16-4
Professional productions use separate mikes for recording audio, instead of using the camera's built-in microphone. True

16-5
Lavaliere  microphones have a(n)        narrow                      pickup pattern

15-4 and 15-5

15-4:

To produce completely shadowless lighting, a white fabric     sheet       can be used.

15-5:

Classic three-point lighting uses key,    fill    , and rim(back) lights on the subject, plus a background light.

Monday, April 25, 2011

15-1, 15-2, 15-3

15-1:

Classic studio lighting is a system in which uses three lights on the subject and usually one or more on the background.  It is often referred to as three-point lighting.
1. Key Light - this is the main illumination which is similiar to a light or lamp fixture.  The end of the key light is commonly a spotlight.
2. Fill Light - this is the filling of the shadows created by the key light.  It is used to reduce the cheek, lip, and neck shadows.
3. Rim (Back) Light - typically behind the subject of the frame.  Generally mounted on over-head clamps or stands.
4. Background Light - Similiar to the key light, it is the light that would naturally fall on the walls or other background items.

15-2:

Natural lighting is a more natural form of lighting as opposed to three-point lighting.  The key to this approach is using soft light.

15-3:

One way to light a background is adjusting the intensity.  To do this, one must even out the light pattern by using a double screen positioned in the spotlight's filter holder.

14-6 through 14-10

Chapter 14

14-6:
High technical standards must be achieved by creating images with light of proper quantity, contrast and color

14-7:
Light quantity is recieved by the exact quantity of light needed to form a high-quality image.  You can increase or decrease the light.  An example of this is to use a reflector.  You can create a shadow or have direct sunlight.

14-8:
Light contrast is the difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest areas in an image.  An example of this is creating too much contrast on a scene causing the subject to appear flat and bland.

14-9:
Light color can be controlled by maintaining white balance.  An example of controlling the light is combining incandescent and fluorescent lights in a scene of managing daylight coming from a window.

14-10:
Five basic lighting styles or labels used in video, film, and theater:
1. Naturalism  2. Realism  3. Pictorial Realism  4. Magic Realism  5. Expressionism

Magic Realism - this is when the digital image processing is percieved with combined elements of realism, pictorial realism, and expressionism.

Thursday, April 7, 2011

14-1 through 14-5

14-1:
Audio is the recording and reproduction of sound in support of the video (Stinson 298)

14-2:
Two problems that you may encounter with audio:
One - The audio picks up every single sound. This is a problem because the dialogue in the scene could be ruined with the extra noise that the microphone picks up.
Two - Recording a sound does not necessarily mean that the sound is recognizable or even convincing. The audio could not match the scene and sound distorted.

14-3:
Production sound is the sound that is recorded with the video.  A difficulty that one could encounter is attempting to record an actual sound for the first time, such as a train derailing.  The problem with this is that if the production sound of the train derailing was unsatisfactory, it would be almost impossible and dangerous to derail another train in an attempt for a better sound.

14-4:
Background sound is the sound that is heard in the background of the scene such as birds, wind, waves, traffic or other people talking.  Two ways to limit background noise include:
One - turn off controllable sounds like heating ducts or background conversations during takes (Stinson 300).
Two - minimize uncontrollable noises such as traffic or wind (Stinson 300).

14-5:
Sound effects are separated from the production track. One example of how a sound effect can be created is using a sound effect library that has thousands of different noises.  Another example is using a Foley studio which is "an environment in which technicians can make sounds while watching a shot on the screen and synchronizing the effects as they are recorded" (Stinson 301).

13-6 and 13-7

March 28th 2011

13-6:
Three common lighting accessories are masking, light reduction and diffusion.
Diffusion is a material that is placed in front of a light to soften the image.

13-7:
Two lighting evaluation tools are monitors and and light meters.  You may need to use one of these tools evalutate the amount of light and monitor it.

Thursday, March 24, 2011

13-4 and 13-5

March 24th 2011

13-4:
Beams of spotlights can be masked, producing a hard-edged cut-off pattern.  Accessories of this technique are barn doors and flags.  Barn doors are pairs of metal that are hinged to the sides and/or top as well as bottom edges of the lamp.

13-5:
Diffusion lighting is similiar to a filter in which it is softening material in front of the screen.  On our interview, we did use milk-white plastic to cover our spotlights.  It was installed into metal rings and placed in holders.

Plagiarism

March 17th 2011

Tutorial:
1) Key tips taken from the article on plagiarism is to cite all work taken from others, make enough time for yourself to do your research, talk to teacher or others as a means of help when citing and learn the type of citation needed in your paper.
2) This can help with my work because it helps me learn how I can quote and paraphrase.

Article:
1) Plagiarism, to me, is the copying of another's work with no recognition given to the original author.
2) I should be personally concerned with plagiarism because if I were to plagiarize, I could be sent to jail.  Not only would this ruin my life, but it would be on my permenant record for colleges and jobs to see.
3) I could become a better writer when putting things into my own words, I can cite different sources to incorporate new information into my papers and lastly, I could always cite works to be sure I'm not plagiarizing.
4) Taken from the Video Book:
Student A (Plagiarized): LEDs are a recently developed form of lighting.
Student B (Correct): "LEDs are a recently developed form of lighting" (Stinson 238).
5) I think many people use plagiarism as an easy way out to avoid having to do more work.

13-2

March 15th 2011

Lighting instruments are ways to improve video lighting.  This could be affected by halogen lighting, better quality flourescent tubes and now that both of these objects are available, households can use them, too.

13-1

March 14th 2011

Three examples of controlling the quantity of available light when the light is too intense:
1. Flags
2. Screens
3. Silks

Screens - large expanses of plastic mesh stretched on frames. Small screens can be held by stands or crew members, but most are mounted on support structures.

13-3

March 21, 2011

Four basic types of lighting used in video (lamps):
1. Incandescent Lamps
2. Halogen Lamps
3.Flourescent Lamps
4. LEDs

LEDs - LED actually stands for Light-Emitting Diodes.  They have been recently developed and are light as well as compact. They consume little power and are becoming more popular.

12-13, 12-14, 12-15

March 7, 2011

12-13:
Framing the shot is to create a pleasing composition within the frame.

12-14:
Look room is allowing more room on the side toward which the person is facing when framing people.  Lead room is allowing extra room on the side of the frame toward which people or objects are moving.

12-15:
You might use planning and tilting of the camera when rotating the camera horizontally or vertically.

12-10, 12-11, 12-12

March 7, 2011

12-10:
The camera in the interview project with the good sound/audio came from the middle camera.

12-11:
Shutter - controls the amount of time alloted to forming each video frame (image).

12-12:
One example of a shutter program is used for sports.  The shutter speed is increased to sharpen fast action that would be blurred at normal shutter speed.

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

12-7, 12-8 and 12-9

March 2, 2011

12-7:
There are three cameras recording for the interview project.

12-8:
The camera on the left, facing the stage, is positioned to be directly on the opposite person of the camera.  Likewise, the camera postitioned on the right, facing the stage, is lined to show the second person of the interview.  The camera positioned in the middle is designed to show both members of the interviewing party.

12-9:
We first hit record, then pop the strobe flash light, so we know exactly where we started the interview and it is easy to edit and review.

12-6

March 2, 2011

12-6:
The aperture on a camera affects how much light is entering the lens of the camera.  This will change the appearance of the shot.

Monday, February 28, 2011

12-3, 12-4 and 12-5

28 February 2011

12-3
Depth of field - the distance, in front of and behind the plane on which the lens is focused, in which objects in the image appear sharp.
An example of how the scene may look is a fence that travels backwards, but seems to curve.

12-4
Perspective - the illusion of depth in the picture, the apparent distance from the cam-corder to the farthest part of the scene.

12-5
An example of how your choice of lens can alter the perspective of the shot is when using a telephoto lens.  The telephoto lens reduces apparent depth , bringing distant objects closer.

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

12-1 and 12-2

23 February 2011

12-1
The focal length of the lens is the distance, expressed in millimeters, from the front element of the lens to the focal point.  The focal point is the point at which the light rays intersect on their way to the focal plane, where the chip is positioned.

12-2
Professional videographers group focal length of lenses into normal, wide-angle, and telephoto.
Normal - focal lenth lenses produce images that closely resemble human vision.
Wide-Angle - focal lengths include a wider field of view than normal lenses.
Telephoto - focal lengths show a narrower, more restricted field of view.

I do feel the article has helped me with the interviw process.  It is nice to have a guide to help me when embarking on a project such as an interview.  I feel more comfortable and at ease for when I have to deliver my interview.

Thursday, February 17, 2011

11-8 and 11-9

17 February 2011

11-8:
Five "top tips" that you should use during your interview:
1. Remember to say three key mesages.
2. Try not to sway or rock side to side.
3. Don't fall for the trick of silence, establish your point without excessive talking.
4. Don't lecture listener.
5. When not knowing answer to question, say so, don't pretend to know it.

11-9:
One "top tip" that you should use after your interview:
1. Congratulate yourself and do not worry if you made a few mistakes.  No one is perfect.  Think of reactions to interview as well as prepare for any follow-up work.

11-6 and 11-7

15 February 2011

Information extracted from the article How to: give a great media interviews.

11-6:
The first thing you need to do in order to prepare for an interview is to get as much background information as possible followed by writing down the three main points you want to establish in your interview.

11-7:
The three "top tips" you should use before an interview:
1. Write down three key messages you want to establish.
2. Be prepared for obvious questions as well as anticipate the more difficult questions.
3. Practice out loud a few times in front of a mirror or friend to get comfortable.

11-3

8 February 2011

Two ways the videotape recorder handles interlaced images:
1.  The electrically encoded information about each video field (one-half frame)
is sent to a record head spinning on a drum in the recorder.

2. The record head preserves the signal by selectively magnetizing
metallic particles on the videotape that moves across its path.

11-2

8 February 2011

Two of four ways a video signal is created:
1. Light passes through the camcorder lens,
which organizesit into a cherent image and
projects it onto the surface of the chip.

 2. The chip contains hundreds of thousands
of microscopic sensors. Each sensor responds
differently to the amount and color of light striking it,
so each sensor creates a different electric signal.

11-1

7 February 2011

1. Bridestone Tires
This was one of my favorites because the beaver and story line were very cute and friendly. The product was Bridgestone Tires. The theme was the friendship between a man and a beaver just because the man saved the beaver's life by stopping with his new tires.

2. Brisk Iced Tea
This commercial was one of my favorites because Eminem, my favorite rapper was in it. The product was Brisk Iced Tea.  The theme was Eminem traveling through sets in an attempt to display the product at end.

3. Chevrolet
This was a great commercial because it incorporated the box-office hit of Transformers.  The product was the Chevy car.  The theme to this commercial was a fun environment with a man trying to sell cars.

The three basics of a training program system:
1. Tell them what you are going to tell them.
2. Tell them.
3. Tell them what you have told them.

9-6

January 19th 2011

Treatment- a treatment is a simple transciption; a few paragraphs that explain the program's concept, its subject, its order of content presentation, and its style. It serves two purposes:
1. One purpose a treament serves is to communicate a vision to your audience, especially colleagues who can help produce your product.

Creating a detailed blueprint:
1. Subject - identify the subject matter by assigning project temporary working title.
2. Objectives - identify client's objectives.
3. Audience - identify who the product is being seld to and what marketing techniques would work for this group of people.
4. Delivery System - identify how the audience will view the video.  The delivery system includes a video monitor or falt screen.
5. Length - identify how long the length of the display will last.
6. Budget - identify how much the display will cost - the amount of money needed to produce the program.

A viral advertisement is a technique used on social networks that helps increase the awareness of brands or other marketing objectives.

My Opinion:
Viral ads are sometimes annoying on the screen, especially when using YouTube.  This is because the video that is being watched is delayed ten or fifteen seconds by the ad.

Viral commercials could affect the video commercial industry pretty drastically.  As these ads become more and more popular, tv commercials would become less viewed and less productive.  More people are beginning to use technology, especially computers, therefore ads would become more viewed through computers than the television.

Perspective - the techniques for suggesting depth in an image

Two Examples of Lens Perspective in the Video World:
1. Using a wide-angle lens --> increases apparent depth
2. Using a telephoto lens --> decreases apparent depth
